Somebody’s Child – Alexandria Dolores

as an adult child — I’m still your kid
you were tasked with cultivating
my first years of life
I am not your savior wishing
to love your pain away
yet as seasons turned I realized
I could not turn to you
because reliving traumas
isn’t something I want to do
we cannot heal our childhood wounds
by having children and banking on them

parents model how to cope
we reinforce all these patterns
even when they’re without hope
those of us “without needs”
are children who refuse to grieve
we believe the world needs protecting
from who we authentically are
when really we are being neglected
and deserve protecting from the start
